New to the fair – this Saturday!

The kingly Steve Tillotson brings us Banal Pig’s Royal Assortment in time for Saturday’s fair!

“Ding Ding! Here’s the cover to my new comic, the 18th banal pig publication, created especially for the 5th Leeds Alternative Comics Fair next weekend (or specifically, the top half of the front cover of the comic- there’s a comic on the bottom half). The comic is 8 big, full colour pages and was originally planned just to be a vehicle for my I, Yeti story, but I have expanded it to include a previously unseen story called Vampire Weekend and two full page strips that are slightly tweaked versions of comics that have been printed in other anthologies. It will be a limited edition so if they all sell at LACF5, that’ll be it. Get in touch though if you can’t make it and you’d like one reserving.”

Friend of LACF, Gareth Brookes, will be selling Christmas editions of Man Man. Here he is, demonstrating a copy:

Isn’t he sweet? Come and give him a hug on Saturday.

And the incomparable Andy Sykes presents his new Hexjibber Anti-Revision Book! I have beheld it. It is very, very good.

“The Hexjibber Anti Revision Book is for people who want to creatively procrastinate, slack off in style and waste time productively. It’s guaranteed to be 100% free of educational value! All the activities inside are based on the most common subjects you would study at School, College or University.

No matter what kind of work you are avoiding, this book has an activity for you! They range from colouring in, drawing challenges, quizzes and puzzles! Pick from English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Design, P.E., Business Studies, Life Skills and many more. So, open the book up and get ready to wrong your brain up, with some Anti Revision!”

I can highly recommend anything from these boys. Please come along and have a look. Maybe even pick up a copy for that unique Christmas present! Ideal for anyone who likes a laff.

It’s gonna be another fun event. And some of us are sacrificing valuable Chrimbo shopping time! So make it worth our while by saying hello! Plus I will be waggling my camera around and hopefully putting together a little documentary of the day!

- Hugh

LACF5 Press Release

You’ve seen the posters, now here’s the blurb:

The Leeds Alternative Comics Fair returns for its fifth outing on Saturday 8th December, and this time it’s got a distinctly seasonal theme. We’re encouraging everyone to ditch the Christmas shopping and discover a haven of creativity and inspiration from some of the finest artists in the North (and beyond), and there will be plenty of unique and unusual comics, art and crafts that will make great gifts. Once again, it’ll take place at A Nation of Shopkeepers, a spacious bar that has proved to be the ideal venue with its great atmosphere, interesting food menu and well-stocked bar, and as usual we’ll be keeping it intimate in scale so that attendees can have a good look at everything on offer, and get to chat with the creators about their wares.

Exhibitors this time include ‘friends of LACF’ Gareth Brookes, James ‘Couk’ Downing, Kristyna Baczynski, Adam Cadwell, Andy ‘Hexjibber’ Sykes, plus organisers Steve Tillotson and Hugh Raine, and Sean Azzopardi will be exhibiting for the first time, along with more new faces to be announced soon.

It’s on from 12 noon until 5pm and as usual the event is completely free to enter, so come along, have a browse, a chat, a drink and a fish finger sarnie, and pick up some unique presents for your friends and family (and don’t forget to treat yourself of course!).

Please check out our twitter and facebook pages for even more info…

More Things New to the Fair!

The above infographic says it all, really looking forward to this. Also new, Gareth Brookes’ The Black Project, the twisted tale of a young boy whose passion for handicrafts and his burgeoning sexual desires combine with horrendous and entertaining results.

Also, I (Steve “Banal Pig” Tillotson) will be selling a few poster prints, mostably this brand new image, hand coloured digitally using traditional Photoshop methods:

LACF3 press release!

The 3rd Leeds Alternative Comics Fair will take place on Saturday 1st October, in A Nation of Shopkeepers, Leeds, just behind the Leeds City Art Gallery.

In keeping with previous events, our small but perfectly formed event hopes to bring you some of the best Northern, alternative comics makers, print-makers and illustrators, who will be selling their wares in the quirky, relaxed bar on Cookridge Street.

Don’t like comics? There’ll be lots more on offer, such as craft wear, badges, art and music.

This event’s guest list includes old friends such as Steve Tillotson (Banal Pig), Hugh “Shug” Raine (REET! Comics), Gary Bainbridge, Andy Waugh, Gareth Brookes, Helen “Memo” Entwisle, Huw “Lem” Davies, Ben Clark, Kristyna Baczynski and Geof Banyard (Fetishman), who will be showcasing new work.

New exhibitors include James Downing (COUK), Jim Medway, Isaac Lenkiewicz, Kelly Walton, Bob Milner (Milk Two Sugars) and a cameo appearance from Darryl Cunningham, of Psychiatric Tales fame.

We are also reintroducing the communal table, giving non-exhibitors the chance to bring their comics along to sell. All we ask is that you help man the table for a short period of time.

The event will run from 12 noon until 5pm and is FREE to enter! So come along, have a browse, a chat, a drink and a fish finger sarnie!

List of Exhibitors at LACF3

We’ve pretty much confirmed the line up now for the 3rd Leeds Alternative Comics Fair, and again we want to feature artists and creators from the North and we’ve tried to bring together a broad range of people with a really interesting mix of comics and other products. Exhibiting this time are Friends of LACF:

Steve Tillotson (Banal Pig)

Hugh “Shug” Raine (Reet Comic)

Gary Bainbridge

Andy Waugh

Gareth Brookes

Helen “Memo” Entwisle

Huw “Lem” Davies

Ben Clark

Kristyna Baczynski

Geof Banyard (Fetishman)

And coming to the fair for the first time are:

James Downing (COUK)

Jim Medway

Isaac Lenkiewicz

Kelly Walton

Bob Milner (Milk Two Sugars)

We’re really happy to have these guys involved, they all make really fantastic comics and stuff,  and they will be a great addition to the fair. Also don’t forget, we will be having a big communal table this time, so please feel free to bring your own comics down (all we ask is that you’re willing to help out for a bit taking the money on the communal table if necessary). That’s more or less it, we’re waiting on a couple of confirmations and we will update this page when we get them.

Things to look out for at the Leeds Alternative Comics Fair Part 1

Hugh “Shug” Raine will be premiering the fourth and final part of his comic miniseries Find Comet, Hit Comet, Watch Comet, Sleep, as well as the rest of his excellent back catalogue of humourous comics.
Ben Clark’s also got a new one out to add to his weird and wonderful set of comics, simply titled Space Dracula which should be well worth checking out.
In a similar vein, Gareth Brookes will be selling his copyright-troubling comic masterpiece Sherlock Holmes versus Skeletor.

Steve Tillotson will be peddling all the banal pig comics portfolio of darkly humourous comics, and will be giving a free minicomic and fridge magnet set with every purchase of £5 or over.

There will also be a communal table for people to drop off and sell comics on the day, which will include a box of small press comics (donated by OK Comics) being flogged off cheap, so there’s sure to be bargains lurking in there!

More news to follow….

Exhibitor Profile number 1- Gareth Brookes

we’ve asked the creators who will be peddling their wares at the leeds alternative comics fair to fill in a simple questionnaire about themselves- firstly, here’s gareth brookes

who? gareth brookes www.appallingnonsense.co.uk
what? man man, smell of the wild, can i borrow your toilet all nice things like that. Sherlock Holmes vs Skeletor is out now!! If you like things where two different people are fighting against each other and the outcome is in doubt, this is the comic you will probably enjoy!!
where? Byfleet and New Haw!
when? all the time
why? Because if I didn’t make comics anymore electricity would stop working, Charles Hawtrey came to me in a dream and told me.
